Two Late Goals Seal Win for Patriots

PHOENIXVILLE — It had been almost a full month since the Germantown Academy varsity ice hockey team had seen any competition. Their first game of the new year was scheduled for Jan. 4, but was cancelled due to inclement weather. So when the Patriots took the ice against Academy of the New Church on Jan. 9, some rust could have been expected.

When Mark Dobson ’20 scored three minutes into the game, it was obvious that that was not the case. GA showed no ill effects from the time off, beating the Lions, 5-2.

“I thought the team came out and played well, actually,” Head Coach John Fields said. “We got off to the start I wanted. I wanted to get the puck in deep behind ANC and get our legs under us. I think we accomplished that.”

Dobson’s goal came on a power play at the 12:01 mark in the first period. The Patriots would find the back of the net two more times in the first, with goals coming from Moseley Schwartz ’20 and Andrew Miao ’18. Just like Dobson earlier, Miao’s goal came on a power play.

Between Schwartz’s goal and the goal by Miao, the Lions were able to get a score of their own. The first period ended with GA leading, 3-1.

The Patriots continued to be dominant on offense in the second, but were unable to find the back of the net. Fields called the period, “very frustrating.”

“It’s frustrating, especially when you’re getting all those chances,” Fields said. “We hit a couple of posts, missed a couple breakaways. The good news is we’re getting opportunities, and I’m okay with that.”

It looked as if the third period would also go by without a goal until the Lions cut GA’s lead to one with 9:08 left to play. However, the comeback would not be successful as Miao scored his second goal of the game and Dobson sealed things with an open-net goal.

After going so long without a game, the Patriots will now face back-to-back action. The team travels to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy on Jan. 10. Fields said that he does not know what to expect from CHA, but that his team needs to be ready.

“CHA is going to come ready,” Fields said. “They’re our rivals. It’s always a competitive game for sure. Whether is physical or speed, it’s going to be competitive.”
